Teen Filmmaker Generates Own To Save A Life Coverage

Super-fan and teen filmmaker Blake of Albany, New York, edited the TO SAVE A LIFE trailer to one minute and got it played in his high school every morning the week before it opened locally. He and his friends wore official movie t-shirts all week. Then he and his crew had their camera at the theater for post-viewing interviews. Check out Blake’s video on Vimeo.

MEET THE CREW: Introducing Jim Britts, the writer

Jim Britts is a graduate of Biola’s prestigious film school who found his life’s calling when he began working with teens. As a veteran youth worker, Britts wrote the script to tell the story of the choices and challenges he sees teens facing today.

“I really wanted to convey the powerful message that simply by reaching out to the hurting and lonely at your school, you have the power to save lives,” Britts says. “Just about every issue dealt with in the script/book I’ve seen countless times with students I mentor and work with.”

The Compliment Guys Spread Encouragement

It started with wanting to do something nice, to brighten someone’s day, to make a difference. So Purdue University student Brett Wescott went to a busy spot on campus and began complimenting people—anyone, everyone, total strangers who walked past. When he told a friend, Cameron Brown joined, and the pair spent several hours every Wednesday dishing out compliments, even through rain, snow or sickness. They became known as The Compliment Guys.

TO SAVE A LIFE wasn’t originally scheduled to open in Lincoln, Nebraska. But when youth worker Chris Hansen saw an advance showing in Omaha, he caught the vision. He recognized that TO SAVE A LIFE isn’t a preachy movie, but one embedded with powerful truths that can change lives. "It’s a movie every teenager in America should see," Hansen told the Lincoln Journal Star. "One of our hopes is to get the teenagers engaged, and that we as an adult community understand what is going on."

Prevention is Relational

In youth work, relationship is proximity. We can’t prevent a crisis in a kid’s life if no one is close enough to sense a disturbance. Effective crisis prevention engages a network of friends and caring adults who look out for each other and know each other well enough to sense when something is going wrong.

It’s our hope that teens, youth workers, parents, teachers, and other leaders will be moved by the movie To Save A Life and use it to reach out to build more relationships, more proximity, more support. What sorts of crises can such a network prevent?
